Cork City,
Dear Pat
Love your Sight
Here is a poem for you
FAIRY FORT

Not knowing
If he be local
Interrupted
His snooze
Enquiring

Removing his cap
Scratching
Dial portraying
Wear some tear

From your attire
Tis the City
You’ve come from
Said he
Are ya believer?
His inquisitive stare

My grin shrug
Left doubt

To O’Shea’s a mile
Then two more
O’Dee’s cross
Left
Signpost says
Fairy Fort
In one breath

Thanking him
Returned to my
Peddles

It’s only a mound
He shouted

Over my shoulder
I glanced smiling

A non-believer
Said he
They’ll know you no©

SP8’s web
My wife told me to Google our last name your web site was the first to come up! Great site and I am glad that there are so many SP8’s as confused on our surname as I am. As I heard, our surname originated in England. But I really don’t know. The only thing I definatly know is that My Great grandfather, Charles, grew up in Iowa and became a successful business man. Great to hear other SP8’s in the world!

-Monday, August 18, 2003 at 01:02:12 (BST) Martin Speight
Leeds, England

It’s my understanding that the name is Anglo-Saxon, being a corruption of the German word (der) Specht, meaning woodpecker. So, it’s about as “English” as any name, I suppose. The highest concentration of Speights I’m aware of is in the old West riding of Yorkshire, England, where’s it’s actually fairly common.
